A river has a very deep path.

Thalweg
Thalweg

This path is the lowest part of the river bed. We call this line a thalweg. The name comes from a German word. It means "valley way." This line shows the natural direction of the water.

Sometimes, the thalweg is used as a border. This is a legal rule. If a border is a river, the line follows the thalweg. The thalweg is the center of the main channel. This is the part where boats can travel most easily. If there are many channels, the rule uses the one with the strongest current. This helps boats move downstream.

People also use rocks to help rivers. They place big boulders along the thalweg. This is called bouldering. It helps stop the river from washing away too much dirt. This keeps the river deep and stable. It can even help keep the water from drying up in the summer. This helps fish and other wildlife stay safe.
