In politics, it is often a place under the rule of a sovereign state. This means a central government has the power to make rules there. Many countries use territories as organized divisions of their land. These areas are not quite the same as states or provinces. They are different from the other main political units in a country.

There are many ways to group these areas. A capital territory is a very special kind of place. It is a designated area where a country's seat of government sits. This helps keep the capital from being part of just one state. A federal territory stays under the direct control of a national government. Some areas are called dependent territories because they are not independent states. They rely on an external government to help them rule.

Words for these places have long histories. The word territory comes from a root that means "to dry." This led to the Latin word terra, which means earth or land. Later, the Latin word territorium meant the land around a town. The word we use today appeared in Middle English during the 14th century. People added a suffix to the word to show it was a place. It is interesting to see how old words change over time.

Some territories are located very far away. These are called overseas territories because an ocean separates them from their home country. The Faroe Islands and Greenland are overseas territories of the Kingdom of Denmark. These places can sometimes rule themselves in some ways. The British Crown also has fourteen different overseas territories. They are not part of the United Kingdom itself. They have different levels of self-governance.

Sometimes, land can be a source of disagreement. A disputed territory is an area that two or more governments claim. For example, India and Pakistan both claim the territory of Kashmir. Another example is the status of Taiwan. Some areas are also known as occupied territories. This happens when a military from an outside power takes control. This can include places like Crimea or the West Bank.
