A terrestrial planet is a world made mostly of rock, metal, or silicate.

You might also hear them called telluric or rocky planets. These worlds are very different from gas giants. Gas giants are huge and made of hydrogen, helium, and water. Terrestrial planets have a solid surface you could actually stand on. This makes them special to study. Geologists and astronomers look at them to learn about solid worlds.

Most terrestrial planets share a similar way they are built. They usually have a central metallic core made of iron. A layer of rock called a mantle surrounds that core. This is how the four inner planets in our Solar System work. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars all follow this pattern. Some moons are also built this way. Earth's Moon and Jupiter's moon Io have similar rocky structures. Even the large asteroid Vesta has a core and a mantle.

Scientists have been finding these worlds for a long time. In the early 1990s, people found planets orbiting a pulsar. Later, in 2005, astronomers found planets orbiting a main-sequence star. One was named Gliese 876 d. It is 15 light-years away from us. Another was called OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb. It is much further away in the Scorpius constellation. In 2011, the Kepler space telescope found the first confirmed terrestrial exoplanet. That planet is named Kepler-10b.

There are many interesting facts about these rocky worlds. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun at 0.39 AU. It has a density of 5.4 g/cm³. Earth is slightly larger with a density of 5.5 g/cm³. Mars is further out at 1.52 AU from the Sun. It has a density of 3.9 g/cm³. Some planets are called super-Earths. These are worlds with more mass than Earth but less than Neptune. They can be gas planets or rocky planets.

These planets help us understand our own home. Earth is the only one with an active surface hydrosphere. A hydrosphere is a system of water on a planet. Some other worlds might have water too. Europa might have water under its thick ice layer.

Even Titan has liquid on its surface. It has liquid methane instead of water. Looking at these distant worlds helps us see how planets form. It shows us how many different types of worlds exist in space.
