Teleosts come in many shapes. Some are long like a tube. Others are very flat. Some are even tiny. The giant oarfish can grow very long. The ocean sunfish is very heavy.

These fish have special jaws. The top part of the jaw is the premaxilla. This bone can move out from the mouth. This helps the fish suck in food. It also helps them grab prey.

Their tails also look different. The top and bottom parts of the tail are equal in size. This is called a homocercal tail.

Many teleosts lay eggs in the water. Most fish do this. The male and female do not always help the babies. Some males guard a nest. They fan the eggs to keep them healthy. People catch teleosts for food. We also study them to learn about life.
