Tel Aviv's history began with a small settlement in 1909.

A group called the Ahuzat Bayit society wanted to build a modern neighborhood. They chose a site on the sand dunes north of the ancient port of Jaffa. They aimed to create a healthy, clean urban center. This was inspired by European cities like Warsaw and Odesa. To assign land, they held a unique lottery. They used 120 seashells from the beach. A boy drew names from white shells. A girl drew plot numbers from grey shells.

The name Tel Aviv has deep meaning. The word "tel" refers to an artificial mound. This mound is created by layers of ancient civilizations building on top of each other. The word "aviv" means "spring" in Hebrew. Together, the name symbolizes a renewal or a renaissance. The name was chosen in 1910. It was inspired by a Hebrew translation of a novel by Theodor Herzl. The title was Tel Abib, which means "Tell of Spring." This name captured the idea of an old land becoming new again.

For many years, Tel Aviv and Jaffa were separate entities.

In 1921, Tel Aviv was granted township status. At that time, it was still under the supervision of the Jaffa Municipality. Tel Aviv leaders worked hard for full independence. They wanted to be an autonomous Hebrew city. They eventually succeeded in 1934 when they gained full municipal independence. After the 1947–1949 Palestine war, the two areas were unified. In August 1950, the city was officially named Tel Aviv-Yafo.
