He hosted this program from its start in 1980 until 2005. Before that, he worked for ABC News for twenty years. People often saw him as a serious and talented interviewer. By 1985, his show had about 7.5 million viewers every night. He helped many people understand what was happening in the world.

His journey into news started with a very difficult childhood. Ted was born in Nelson, England, in 1940. His parents were Jewish refugees who had fled from Germany. They moved to England to run a tire factory. During a war, his father was even sent to prison for about a year.

In 1953, when Ted was thirteen, his family moved to the United States. He grew up wanting to follow in the footsteps of radio reporter Edward R. Murrow.

Ted worked very hard to build a great career in news. He started as a young reporter for ABC Radio News in 1963. That same year, he had to speak on the radio for ninety minutes during the Kennedy assassination. Later, he became a reporter for the Vietnam War on television. He even traveled to China with President Richard Nixon in 1972. He described that big trip as being like a journey to the dark side of the moon. He was very good at using plain language to explain hard topics.

Nightline began because of a very big news event. In 1979, a group of militants held 52 Americans captive in Iran. The show started as special reports about this hostage crisis.

Ted Koppel eventually became the main host of the program. He stayed in that role for twenty-five years. During his long career, he won many prizes for his work. He earned 43 Emmy Awards and nine awards from the Overseas Press Club. These awards show how much people respected his reporting.

After he left Nightline, Ted Koppel did not stop working in news. He worked as a managing editor for the Discovery Channel. He also shared his thoughts on NPR radio and for BBC World News America. In 2008, he made a long documentary series about China. He was very proud of this work. Even today, he still shares news as a contributor for CBS News Sunday Morning. His life shows how much one person can learn about the world through news.
