He was described as a very intelligent but socially reserved student. During his second year, he participated in a psychological study led by Henry Murray. This study involved intense, personal attacks from an anonymous individual. Kaczynski later expressed resentment toward this perceived invasion of privacy.

After Harvard, Kaczynski pursued advanced studies in mathematics. He attended the University of Michigan for his graduate work. He earned his master's degree in 1964 and his doctorate in 1967. His doctoral dissertation, titled "Boundary Functions," won the Sumner B. Myers Prize. This award recognized it as the best mathematics dissertation at Michigan that year. Kaczynski specialized in complex analysis and geometric function theory. In 1967, he became an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He was the youngest person to hold that position in the university's history. However, he resigned unexpectedly in June 1969 without giving an explanation.

In 1971, Kaczynski sought a life of total autonomy. He moved to a remote cabin near Lincoln, Montana.

The cabin had no electricity or running water. He lived as a recluse and worked odd jobs to survive. He focused on learning survival skills to become self-sufficient. During this time, he read deeply into sociology and political philosophy. He became particularly interested in the work of Jacques Ellul. He eventually concluded that industrialization was destroying the wilderness. This realization drove his decision to fight technology through violence.

Kaczynski's bombing campaign lasted from 1978 to 1995. He used the mail to send bombs to various targets. The FBI identified the crimes through the case name UNABOM. This stood for "University and Airline Bombing."

This investigation became the longest and most expensive in FBI history. Kaczynski's actions resulted in three deaths and 23 injuries. The media began calling him the "Unabomber" because of these specific targets. His primary goal was to draw attention to his social critiques. He argued that modern technology eroded human freedom and dignity.

In 1995, Kaczynski attempted to share his ideas with the public. He wrote a 35,000-word manifesto titled "Industrial Society and Its Future." He sent a letter to The New York Times requesting publication. He promised to stop his terrorism if they printed his essay. The FBI and Attorney General Janet Reno pushed for its publication. The essay eventually appeared in The Washington Post in September 1995. After reading the text, his brother David Kaczynski recognized his writing style. David reported his suspicions to the authorities, leading to an arrest.
