Rocks can change shape deep inside the Earth.

Natural forces push on them. These forces move the minerals inside the rock. The minerals can even change into new forms. This is called metamorphism. This change makes patterns in the rock. Scientists study these patterns. They show how the Earth pushed or squeezed the rock.

There are three main types of these rocks. First are S-tectonites. These rocks have a flat pattern. This is called foliation. It happens when the rock is flattened. Next are L-tectonites. These rocks have a line pattern. This is called lineation. It happens when the rock is squeezed in a certain way. The last type is L-S tectonites. These show both flat and line patterns. They can show many ways the rock moved.
