Technology transfer

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Technology transfer is the way new inventions reach the people who need them. Scientists and inventors create amazing things in labs. However, an idea is not a product yet. Technology transfer moves these ideas from the owners to new users. This process helps turn scientific outcomes into products and services. It can benefit all of society. This work is a key way to connect creators with the public.

The way it works involves many steps. First, people create new knowledge. Next, they must disclose or share that information. Then, experts perform an assessment and evaluation. They look at the value of the intellectual property. Intellectual property is a way to protect and own an idea. After that, people find funding and develop the technology. Finally, they use marketing and product development to reach the world. This path is rarely a straight line.

People have been doing this for a very long time. In ancient times, Archimedes applied science to practical problems. Today, the process is much more formal. High-profile failures at places like Xerox PARC helped people focus on the process itself. Now, many organizations use special offices to help. These are often called Technology Transfer Offices, or TTOs. They help universities manage their assets and work with industry.

Many different groups help technology move around the world. The Association of University Technology Managers, or AUTM, has over 3,100 professionals. They represent more than 800 different organizations. There are also groups like the Association of European Science and Technology Transfer Professionals. In Canada, research spin-off companies are a popular way to sell ideas. In the United States and the European Union, people often use venture capital to fund new ideas. This is called raising venture capital.

You can see technology transfer in your own life. It helps solve huge global problems. This includes things like climate change and cyber-attacks. Sometimes, a school starts a new small company called a spin-out. This happens if the school does not have the resources to grow the idea alone. Other times, science parks or incubators help new businesses grow. These places provide training and money to help entrepreneurs. This ensures that science leads to real tools for everyone.
