Tang Yin was a legendary figure in Chinese art history. He lived during the Ming dynasty as a painter, calligrapher, and poet.

He is celebrated as one of the "Four Masters of the Ming dynasty." This prestigious group includes Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, and Qiu Ying. Tang was also a member of the "Four Literary Masters of the Wuzhong Region." His work is known for its deep insight and technical skill. He was considered a supreme talent in the Jiangnan area of Southern China.

Tang's early life was defined by hard work and high ambitions. He was born in 1470 in Suzhou to a family that operated a restaurant. Despite his modest economic background, he studied with great dedication. He hoped to join the civil service through the imperial examination system. In 1498, he achieved a major success by placing first in the provincial examinations in Nanjing. This was the second stage of the long ladder of imperial exams.

However, a sudden crisis changed the course of his life forever. In 1499, Tang and his friend Xu Jing went to the capital for national examinations. They were accused of bribing a servant to obtain examination questions in advance. Both men were sent to jail because of these accusations. This event destroyed Tang's chances for a distinguished government career. He returned to Suzhou in disgrace, unable to pursue official office again.

Instead of a government role, Tang turned to a life of professional artistry. He earned his living by selling his paintings and poems. This lifestyle led some later critics, such as Dong Qichang, to judge him harshly. These critics believed that true artists needed financial independence to maintain their unique styles. Despite this criticism, Tang became highly successful. He perfected the semi-cursive script, also known as running script.

Tang's artistic style was both unique and deeply rooted in the past. While he lived in the Ming dynasty, he often looked to much older eras. His paintings of people frequently used elements from the Pre-Tang and Song dynasties. He was famous for depicting feminine beauty, but he also mastered landscapes. His landscapes showed the same variety and expression as his most famous peers.

As a poet, Tang explored emotional depths that other artists often avoided. While contemporaries like Wen Zhengming focused on different themes, Tang wrote about the complexities of human nature. His poems addressed envy, venality, and cupidity. He often wrote about the bitterness of truth and the relentlessness of fate. Many of his poems dealt with the loss of childlike innocence. Even when his poems began with optimism, they often ended with a sense of regret. One famous verse described ten stalks of bamboo remaining green even in the winter.

Because of his eccentric lifestyle, Tang became a figure of folklore. Storytellers often portrayed him as a clever trickster. One popular legend claims he sold himself into slavery to be near a girl he loved. This romantic myth inspired many works of theater, such as the play "Three Words" by Feng Menglong. It also led to the creation of the opera "The Three Smiles."

Tang's legacy continues to thrive in modern popular culture. His life has been the subject of many films in Hong Kong. These include productions from 1953, 1957, 1969, 1975, 1993, 2010, 2014, and 2019. His physical works remain highly valued by collectors and museums worldwide. You can find his paintings in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. His art is also held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
