She is recognized for her specialized focus on figure painting. While many artists of her era preferred landscapes, Qiu Zhu centered her work on people. She was particularly noted for her depictions of the goddess Guanyin. Guanyin is a bodhisattva of compassion. This figure is especially appealing to women. Scholars have described her paintings of this goddess as "mysteriously transcendent." Her refined style earned her high respect among her contemporaries.

Qiu Zhu used specific techniques to create her visual effects. She utilized firm brushstrokes to provide structure to her work. She paired these with delicate drawing to capture fine details. One notable series consists of 24 portraits of Guanyin. These portraits are presented in a specialized album format. The artist used gold ink on black paper for this series. This combination of materials created a striking visual contrast. The portraits alternate with short passages of text. This series was inspired by woodblock prints by Ding Yunpeng. Those prints were based on a hand scroll by the artist Li Gonglin.

Her subject matter included both religious and secular themes. In her religious works, she painted figures like Guanyin. She also created a fan painting of a Daoist Female Immortal. This figure may be the goddess Chang E. Her non-religious paintings often depicted women at leisure.

One painting shows women playing xiangqi, a strategy game, under plum blossoms. Another depicts a woman playing the guqin, a musical instrument, under wutong trees. She also painted women sitting at writing desks or playing with parrots. These scenes offer a glimpse into specific social or quiet moments.

Qiu Zhu’s life is tied to several important historical figures. She was born in Taicang County, within the Suzhou Prefecture. She was the daughter of Qiu Ying. Her father was one of the Four Masters of the Ming dynasty. It is assumed she learned the art of painting from him. She may have lived at the estate of Xiang Yuanbian. Xiang was a collector and a patron of her father. Qiu Zhu maintained a close relationship with the Xiang family. This connection continued even after her father died. Some scholars believe she was married to the artist You Qiu. However, this specific detail is still questioned by some researchers.

Her professional career was active from approximately 1565 to 1585. During these two decades, she received several important commissions. She was asked to produce paintings for birthday gifts. She also created art intended to complement calligraphy. One major task involved illustrating the Nymph of the Luo River. This is a narrative poem by the scholar Wang Chong. Because Wang Chong was held in high esteem, her work was well received. A later Ming dynasty scholar even compared her to Li Gonglin. He called her a "Li Gonglin among women" to honor her skill.

Specific works by Qiu Zhu are preserved in major collections today. Her acclaimed painting, White Robed Guanyin, is held by the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The album of 24 Guanyin portraits consists of 26 leaves. These works demonstrate her mastery of gold ink on dark backgrounds. Her ability to capture grace is seen in her various compositions. Even her fan paintings, such as the one of a Daoist Female Immortal, show her range. These pieces allow modern viewers to study her unique approach to line and color.

Qiu Zhu’s legacy extends into the broader history of Chinese art. Her highly refined painting style had a lasting impact. She is credited with influencing the artist Wen Shu. By focusing on the human figure, she carved out a unique space in the Ming dynasty art world. Her work connects the traditions of her father to the evolving styles of the later 16th century. She remains a significant figure for studying the contributions of women to Chinese painting history.
