Hisashige Tanaka was a famous inventor and engineer from Japan.

He lived during the Bakumatsu and early Meiji periods. People often call him the "Thomas Edison of Japan." He was also known as "Karakuri Giemon." Tanaka was born in Kurume in the Chikugo province. His father was a craftsman who worked with tortoise shells.

Tanaka showed great talent as a young boy. At age eight, he made an inkstone case with a secret lock. You had to twist a cord to open it. At age 14, he built a loom for weaving fabric.

As he grew older, Tanaka focused on making karakuri dolls. These are autonomous dolls that move on their own. They use springs, air, and water power to work. Some of his best dolls were the Yumi-Hiki Doji and the Moji-kaki doll. One could shoot arrows and the other could write letters.

He also made many practical items for daily life. In 1834, he moved to Osaka to try new ideas. He made a lamp with an air-pressurized fuel pump. This pump helped the oil lamp work well. He even built a clock that could track many years.

Tanaka's life changed when he moved to Kyoto to study western learning. This type of study is called rangaku. He learned about astronomy and new ways to use machines. Later, he went to the Saga Domain in Kyūshū. He was invited there by Sano Tsunetami. In Saga, he worked with leaders like Nabeshima Naomasa.

This was a very important time for his work. He began to build machines that used steam power.

Tanaka helped build Japan's first steam locomotive and a steam warship. He did not have much experience with steam at first. He learned by reading a Dutch book and watching a Russian diplomat. The diplomat showed him a steam engine in Nagasaki in 1853. Tanaka later studied at the Nagasaki Naval Training Center. He made models of ships with screws and side-paddles. He also worked on telegraphs and a glass factory. He even helped build a furnace to make guns.

In 1875, Tanaka moved to the Ginza district in Tokyo. He started a company called Tanaka Seisakusho. This was the first company in Japan to make telegraph equipment. After he died in 1881, his son started a new company. That company changed its name to Toshiba in 1904. In 1939, it merged with another company to become Tokyo Shibaura Denki. Today, most people know this large company as Toshiba. His work helped lead Japan into a new age of technology.
