Tally marks are great for tracking scores. They help you count things as they happen. You do not have to erase anything to add more. This makes them very useful for games.

Most people group marks into sets of five. This makes them easy to read. It also helps you avoid mistakes.

People have used marks to count for a very long time. Some of the oldest tools are notched sticks or bones. A bone called the Wolf bone was found in Czechoslovakia. It is about 30,000 years old. It has 55 marks on it.
