Maya numerals

math Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Maya people used a special way to count. This system is called vigesimal. That means it is based on the number twenty.

They used only three signs to make numbers. A dot means one. A bar means five. A shell means zero. To write thirteen, they used three dots over two bars.

For big numbers, they wrote in rows. Each row goes up by twenty. This is like how we use tens. To write thirty-three, they put one dot above thirteen. The dot stands for one twenty.

They could also add and subtract. To add, they put the signs together. If they got five dots, they used one bar instead. If they got four bars, they added a dot to the next row up.

Sometimes, the Maya changed how they counted for their calendar. In the second row, they only counted up to seventeen. The third row used eighteen times twenty. This made the number 360. This number is close to the days in a year.
