It serves as a vital administrative and economic hub for the region. The city is located within the Takamatsu Plain, which is part of the larger Sanuki Plain. This landscape is defined by a gentle slope that moves toward the coast. To the north, the city meets the Seto Inland Sea. This coastal connection is centered around Takamatsu Port and Takamatsu New Port, also called Shinminato.

The physical geography of the city is shaped by several distinct landforms. The northern section forms a semicircular urban area facing the sea. In the western part, an alluvial fan was created by the Koto River. An alluvial fan is a landform created when a river deposits sediment. The eastern side consists of a flooded plain formed by the Kasuga and Shinkawa rivers. In the northeast, the Yashima plateau rises as a table-shaped landform. This plateau protrudes into the Seto Inland Sea. Additionally, parts of the city fall within the Setonaikai National Park. The city's territory even includes several small inhabited islands in the sea.

Takamatsu experiences a humid subtropical climate, known as Cfa in the Köppen climate classification.

This means the city has hot and humid summers. The winters are characterized by cooler temperatures. While rain occurs throughout the entire year, the heaviest precipitation falls between May and September. This seasonal cycle influences the daily life and environment of the prefecture.

The history of the area stretches back to the ancient Sanuki Province. During the Heian and Kamakura periods, the location was a major transportation center. It served as a gateway for pilgrims traveling to the Kotohira Shrine from Honshu. In 1588, Ikoma Chikamasa constructed the first Takamatsu Castle. Later, in 1642, the Matsudaira family was awarded the Takamatsu Domain. They ruled the area until the Meiji restoration. The modern municipality was officially established on February 15, 1890.

During World War II, the city was a target for the United States' XXI Bomber Command. This was because the city was a focal point for rail and road transit. On July 3, 1945, B-29 bombers dropped 800 tons of incendiary bombs. This event destroyed 78% of the built-up areas and killed 1,359 people. The city recovered quickly and continued to expand its borders.

Today, Takamatsu is a significant economic center in the Shikoku region. It is the largest municipality on the island. The city hosts many branch offices for nationwide companies. It also contains most of the national government's branch offices for Shikoku. The Symbol Tower, completed in 2004, is the city's tallest building.

The restored Takamatsu Castle is unique because its moat uses seawater. The Yashima plateau offers an observation deck with views of the sea. At the base of the mountain, the Shikoku Mura open-air museum exhibits regional culture. These landmarks connect the modern city to its deep historical roots.
