The name "Taif" has a very specific meaning in Arabic. It comes from a root that can mean "wanderer," "roamer," or "circulator." This is linked to the word "Tawaf," which means circulation or circumambulation. The city earned this name because the Banu Thaqif tribe built a wall that encircled the city. Before this, the city had a different name: Wajj. This was also the name of a significant valley in Islamic history. Long ago, the city was a religious center. It once housed the idol of the goddess Lāt, who was known as "the lady of Ta'if."

Taif has experienced many shifts in power throughout its long history. In the early 7th century, the prophet Muhammad visited the city. At that time, the Banu Thaqif tribe inhabited the area. The city later came under Ottoman rule in 1517. The Ottoman Empire controlled the region for three centuries. In 1802, rebels allied with the House of Saud retook the city. Later, in 1813, the Egyptian Wali Muhammad Ali launched an attack to reconquer the Hejaz, including Taif. A Swiss traveler named Johann Ludwig Burckhardt visited in 1813. He recorded that many buildings were still in ruins from earlier conquests.

The modern history of Taif is tied to the rise of the Saudi state. During the Arab Revolt in 1916, the city faced a siege by Hashemite forces. After the revolt, tensions grew between the King of the Hejaz and Abdulaziz al-Saud. In 1924, the Ikhwan militia attacked the city. This led to a violent event known as the Ta'if massacre. By 1926, Abdulaziz al-Saud was recognized as the King of Hejaz. Eventually, in 1932, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia was formed. Taif became an important part of this new nation. In 1934, a treaty was signed here to set the boundaries with Yemen. Two Saudi kings, King Saud and King Khalid, both died in this city.

Today, Taif is a vital center for agriculture and manufacturing. It stands out in the Hijazi region for its high agricultural output. The area is famous for growing grapes, pomegranates, figs, and honey.

The city is also nicknamed the "City of the Roses." This is because of the Damask rose, or Rosa damascena trigintipetala. These small, fragrant pink roses are distilled into expensive rose oil. This oil is used by luxury perfume brands like Chanel and Hermès. The city also produces traditional attar, which is a type of perfume oil. This agricultural success has helped the local economy grow significantly.

Nature and tourism are also very important to the region. Taif is home to several beautiful landmarks and parks. The Jebel Daka is a very high peak and is the fifth highest in Saudi Arabia.

The city is connected to the resort town of Al-Hada by the iconic Highway 15. This road is a major route for travelers seeking the mountain resorts.

As the city grows, its infrastructure is expanding to meet new needs. Taif is currently served by the Taif International Airport. This airport is working to increase its capacity significantly. It aims to grow from 600,000 passengers per year to four million passengers by 2030. The Taif governorate is managed through fifteen smaller municipalities. The main city administration is divided into five specific areas: North, West, East, South, and New Taif. These developments help Taif maintain its role as a major destination for both trade and tourism.
