Al-Baha Province is a unique administrative region in Saudi Arabia. It is located in the southwestern part of the Hejaz region.
The geography of Al-Baha is defined by dramatic changes in elevation. The landscape is divided by massive rocky cliffs into two distinct sectors. To the east, the Sarawat mountain range dominates the terrain.
Climate patterns in the province depend heavily on these topographic differences. The Sarawat mountain area is frequently exposed to clouds and fog. This often occurs during the winter months. Air masses moving from the Red Sea bring moisture and thunderstorms to the peaks.
The history of Al-Baha stretches back to ancient times. Before the era of Islam, the Sarawat highlands were inhabited by the Amalek. The Amalek were a group of pre-Islamic extinct Arabs. Eventually, the Ghatareef people displaced them from the entire Sarawat region. The Ghatareef then settled the Azd tribe in these mountains. Visitors can still see evidence of this long history through ancient rock carvings. These carvings include depictions of human figures and ibexes. The province also contains inscriptions in the Musnad script and Hebrew. In the early Islamic period, the region produced many prominent companions of the Prophet Muhammad. One notable figure was Abu Hurayra, a prolific narrator of Hadith. Recently, in late 2023, archaeologists discovered 150 artifacts at the Al-Ma‘mlah site. These finds included a pottery jar featuring early Islamic inscriptions.
Modern administrative organization changed how the province is governed. Before modern structures, leadership was based on tribal systems. The Zahran and Ghamd tribes were the primary groups in the area. These tribes had paramount sheikhs who represented their various clans. The province was once known as the Emirate of Al-Dhafeer. It was subordinate to that region during the time of King Abdulaziz. During the reign of King Faisal, Al-Baha became an independent administrative province. The administrative center was moved to Baljurashi after a request from the people. Later, Saud bin Abdul Rahman was appointed governor. He chose the village of Al-Baha as the site for the new regional emirate.
Today, the province is divided into nine distinct governorates. Al-Baha City is the largest, with a population of 90,515 as of 2022.

Al-Baha serves as an important link between different environments and cultures. Its strategic location along ancient trade routes helped shape its heritage. The province is connected to other regions by major roads like the Al-Baha–Taif Highway. For air travel, residents use the King Saud Domestic Airport in Al-Aqiq.
