One massive event was the Pasong eruption. This eruption was part of the "Pasong Fluidal Juvenile Bomb-Rich Ignimbrite Formation." It ejected 144 cubic kilometers of material. This event sent pyroclastic flows across southern Luzon. These flows are fast-moving currents of hot gas and volcanic matter. The eruption left thick ash deposits in many places. Some areas received up to 45 meters of material. These ancient layers are organized into the Taal Group. This group consists of ten named formations and three unofficial units.
Specific formations within the Taal Group tell a story of time. The Sampaga Tuff Formation is the oldest recognized unit. It is about 2.4 meters thick in some areas. It contains dark pumice and fine ash. Above this is the Batangas Tuff Formation. This layer shows evidence of violent eruptions. It features two different types of volcanic ash flows. Next is the Alitagtag Banded Pumice Ignimbrite Formation. This formation is about 10 meters thick. It contains unique black dacitic pumice bombs. 
Because of its history, Taal is a very important site for science. It has been designated a Decade Volcano. This means it is a site that requires intense study to prevent disasters. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) monitors the area. They have declared Volcano Island a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). This is because the island is a high-risk area. Permanent settlement is prohibited by law. However, some families still live there. They farm the rich volcanic soil or go fishing. 
Recent history shows how quickly the volcano can change. In 2020, a major eruption occurred. This event caused the Main Crater Lake to temporarily disappear. The lake returned by March 2020.
