People have studied Mayon for a long time. The first recorded eruption was in 1616. In 1814, a very large eruption occurred. It destroyed the town of Cagsawa and killed about 1,200 people.

Today, only a bell tower remains from that town. In 1881, a scientist named Samuel Kneeland watched the lava. He said the glowing lava looked like red-hot iron. He even saw the fires twinkling like stars at night.

The volcano is shared by eight different cities and towns. These include Legazpi, Daraga, Camalig, and Guinobatan. Other areas are Ligao, Tabaco, Malilipot, and Santo Domingo. Scientists from PHIVOLCS monitor the volcano from Ligñon Hill. They watch for earthquakes and gas to keep people safe.

Mayon is a very important part of nature. It was made a national park in 1938. Later, it became the Mayon Volcano Natural Park in 2000.

It is most famous for its nearly perfect symmetric conical shape. This shape is a result of a precise balance between volcanic eruptions and the process of erosion. The volcano's profile follows a hyperbolic sine curve. The upper slopes are very steep, with an average gradient of 75%. In contrast, the lower foot slopes are much flatter, averaging only 3%.

As a stratovolcano, Mayon is built from layers of material erupted over time. It features a small central summit crater that is approximately 250 meters in diameter.

Scientists have identified at least 85 distinct lava flows. These flows consist mainly of lava augite-hypersthene-andesite. The volcano also produces dangerous pyroclastic flows. These are fast-moving clouds of hot gas and volcanic matter known as a St. Vincent nuee ardente. These flows leave behind deposits of block and ash. They can also create breadcrust bombs within an ash and lapilli matrix. One recorded flow traveled 8.5 km toward Fidel Surtida in Santo Domingo.

Beyond the main volcano, the landscape includes other volcanic features. There are seven cinder cones located on the southern and southwestern lower slopes. These cones average 230 meters in height and 710 meters in diameter. They are composed of olivine-augite basalt. One example of such a feature is Ligñon Hill. The volcano also faces the threat of lahars. These are volcanic mudflows created when rainstorms occur during an eruption or when torrential rain falls afterward.

Mayon is part of a larger geological system called the Pacific Ring of Fire. It sits on the southeast side of Luzon. The volcano is part of the Bicol Arc. This arc is one of seven oceanic trench subduction zones that define the Philippine Mobile Belt. The volcanism in this region is caused by the westward subduction of the Philippine Plate along the Philippine Trench. This geological process also fuels other active and inactive volcanoes in the arc, such as Mount Bulusan and Mount Isarog.

History shows that Mayon is extremely active, having erupted over 52 times in the last 500 years. The first recorded eruption occurred in 1616. One of the most significant events was the eruption on February 1, 1814. This was a massive VEI-4 event. It produced dark ash and tephra that buried the town of Cagsawa. About 1,200 local people died during this eruption.

Today, only the bell tower of the Cagsawa church remains. Some scientists believe this eruption contributed to the atmospheric ash that helped cause the "Year Without a Summer" in 1816.

Other major eruptions have shaped the history of the region. In 1897, a seven-day eruption killed more than 400 people. During this event, the village of Bacacay was buried under lava. In the 1990s, a 1993 eruption produced pyroclastic flows that killed 79 people. More recently, the year 2000 saw violent eruptions from February 28 to March 1. These eruptions displaced 14,114 families and caused ₱89-million in damage to property and crops.

Because of its importance, Mayon is heavily protected and monitored. It was declared a national park on July 20, 1938. It was later renamed the Mayon Volcano Natural Park in 2000. The volcano is the centerpiece of the Albay Biosphere Reserve, a status granted by UNESCO in 2016. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) monitors the volcano from its headquarters on Ligñon Hill. This monitoring helps protect the many people living in the eight cities and municipalities that share the volcano.
