Many people call it a "perfect cone." This is because it has a very symmetric shape.

This shape comes from a balance between eruptions and erosion. Erosion is when wind or water wears down the land.

Mayon is the most active volcano in the country. It has erupted over 52 times in the last 500 years.

Some eruptions send out hot lava. Other times, the volcano sends out pyroclastic flows. These are fast clouds of hot ash and rock.

These flows can be very dangerous. In 1814, a big eruption buried the town of Cagsawa. Today, only a bell tower remains from that town.

Scientists watch Mayon very closely. They work for an agency called PHIVOLCS. They measure shakes in the ground and gas from the crater. This helps them tell people when to leave. This keeps many families safe from the volcano's power.
