The way the volcano works involves moving magma and gas. In early 1991, magma began rising toward the surface. This caused thousands of small earthquakes to happen. Between June 7 and June 12, the magma reached the surface. It first oozed out to form a lava dome. Then, a much more violent phase began with big explosions. On June 15, the volcano had a huge eruption. It ejected more than 10 billion tons of material. This blast was so strong that the summit collapsed. This created a large, wide hole called a caldera. 
Geologists have studied the history of this mountain for a long time. F. G. Delfin did a big study in 1983 and 1984. He found that there were two different stages of the volcano. He called them "ancestral" and "modern" Pinatubo. The ancestral volcano began about 1.1 million years ago. It was a different shape and less explosive. The modern volcano was born from very large eruptions in the past. One of these old eruptive periods was called the Inararo period. This period was named after a village that was destroyed. 
The 1991 eruption was a very big event for the world. It was the second-largest eruption of the 20th century. This happened after the Novarupta eruption in Alaska in 1912. The eruption happened at the same time as Typhoon Yunya. The wind from the typhoon blew the ash in many directions. Some ash even fell as far away as the Indian Ocean. The ash sent a haze of sulfuric acid into the sky. This haze caused global temperatures to drop by about 0.5 degrees Celsius. 
Today, the volcano looks very different than it did before. The large hole at the top is now a beautiful lake.

This volcano is part of a chain of subduction volcanoes. These mountains form along the western side of Luzon. They arise because the Eurasian plate slides under the Philippine Mobile Belt. This movement occurs along the Manila Trench to the west. This process is known as magmatic occlusion at the subduction plate boundary. The volcano is also flanked by the Zambales Ophiolite Complex. This is a section of ancient oceanic crust that was uplifted long ago. Nearby, the Tarlac Formation consists of marine and volcanoclastic sediments.
Geologist F. G. Delfin studied the mountain in 1983 and 1984. He identified two distinct life histories for the volcano. He classified them as "ancestral" and "modern" Pinatubo. Ancestral Pinatubo began its activity about 1.1 million years ago. It was an andesite and dacite stratovolcano. Its eruptions were much less explosive than the modern version. The ancestral volcano was a somma volcano. Modern Pinatubo grew as a new cone inside the old structure. Much of the rugged land nearby is actually made of ancestral remnants.
Modern Pinatubo has a long history of massive eruptive periods. The Inararo Eruptive Period was the largest and most violent. It produced eruptions five times larger than the 1991 event. Other major periods include the Sacobia, Pasbul, and Buag periods. The Buag eruption occurred around 1500 AD. Following that eruption, the volcano lay dormant for about 500 years. During this repose, dense rainforest covered the slopes. This period of dormancy was actually one of the shorter ones in its history. 
The 1991 eruption was a cataclysmic event for the planet. It is classified as a VEI-6 eruption. This makes it the second-largest terrestrial eruption of the 20th century. The only larger one was the 1912 Novarupta eruption in Alaska. In early 1991, rising magma caused thousands of small earthquakes. By June 12, the magma reached the surface to form a lava dome. On June 15, the volcano exploded with incredible force. It ejected more than 10 billion tons of material into the atmosphere. 
This climactic eruption caused massive local and global changes. The ash cloud rose high into the atmosphere. At the same time, Typhoon Yunya made landfall in the Philippines. The typhoon's winds blew the ash in many different directions. Some fine ash fell as far away as the Indian Ocean. 
The landscape was permanently altered by the 1991 blast. The eruption removed so much magma that the summit collapsed. This created a wide caldera in the mountain. Large pyroclastic flows filled deep valleys with thick deposits. Later, rainwater re-mobilized these deposits to create dangerous floods called lahars. Today, the caldera has filled with water from monsoon rains. This has created a large crater lake known as Lake Pinatubo.
