To make the T-54, they built a larger hull to fit a 100 mm gun. This gun was much more powerful than the guns on older tanks. The T-54-2 version added a new dome-shaped turret to help the design. Later, the T-55 improved the engine to be a 12-cylinder diesel. This new engine helped the tank move with more power and strength.

Building these tanks took many years of testing and changes. The first T-54 prototype was finished at Nizhny Tagil in late 1945. Production for the T-54 began slowly because designers made 1,490 different changes. The T-54A model officially entered production in 1954. By the time the T-55 arrived, it was ready for service in May 1958. These tanks were made at places like the Stalin Ural Tank Factory No. 183. Designers like Kolesnikow and Leonid N. Kartsev helped lead these important projects.

The development of these tanks began with improvements to earlier models. The T-34 was a well-regarded tank from the 1940s. However, wartime production needs prevented designers from adding newer technologies to it. In 1943, the Morozov Design Bureau created the T-44. This model featured a space-efficient torsion-bar suspension. It also used a novel transverse engine mount. The T-44 was superior to the T-34 because of its armor and 85 mm gun. Designers eventually realized that a 100 mm gun required a larger turret ring. This led to a slightly larger hull design. A prototype of this new model was completed in 1945.

Initial production of the T-54 was a slow process. Designers had to make 1,490 different modifications during the early stages. The T-54-1 was the first serial production version. It featured 80 mm of armor on the sides. The roof had 30 mm of armor, and the bottom had 20 mm. As production increased, quality issues led to the T-54-2 version. This model featured a new dome-shaped turret. This turret was inspired by the IS-3 heavy tank. It included a distinctive overhang at the rear. The T-54-2 also featured a modernized transmission and widened tracks.

Further refinements led to the T-54A and T-54B models. In 1953, Leonid N. Kartsev became the designer. He oversaw the addition of the STP-1 "Gorizont" vertical stabilizer. This device helped keep the 100 mm D-10T gun steady. The T-54A also introduced night vision equipment. This included an infrared driver's periscope and an infrared headlight. The T-54B, which entered production in 1957, used the STP-2 "Tsyklon" 2-plane stabilizer. This version also included an L-2 "Luna" infrared searchlight. These technological leaps allowed the tanks to remain competitive against NATO armor.

The T-55 was a significant evolution of the T-54 design. It entered production at the Stalin Ural Tank Factory No. 183 on January 1, 1958. The T-55 featured a new V-55 12-cylinder diesel engine. This engine produced 581 hp or 433 kW. Designers also increased the ammunition load from 34 to 45 rounds. Some shells were stored in "wet containers" inside the hull fuel tanks. To increase range, extra fuel tanks were added to the front of the hull. The T-55 also included a specialized NBC protection system. This stands for nuclear, biological, and chemical protection.

The NBC protection system was a response to nuclear weapon trials. Testing showed a T-54 could survive a 2 to 15 kt nuclear charge. The system was designed to activate 0.3 seconds after detecting gamma radiation. It provided protection against nuclear blasts and radioactive particulate filtration. This system was completed by the KB-60 design bureau in 1956. While the T-55 had thinner turret armor than some heavy tanks, it had better mobility. It also had a faster rate of fire than the IS-2 or IS-3 heavy tanks. The T-55 could fire at least four rounds per minute. This was faster than the fewer than three rounds per minute seen in heavy tanks.

The presence of these tanks changed military technology globally. During the Cold War, Soviet tanks did not face NATO tanks in European combat. However, the appearance of the T-54 in the 1950s changed Western development. The United Kingdom developed the Royal Ordnance L7 tank gun in response. The United States created the M60 tank to compete with Soviet designs. This era of competition drove rapid advancements in armor and weaponry. The T-54/55 series remains a major part of military history. They were eventually replaced by newer Soviet models like the T-62 and T-72.
