A fourth prototype was designed specifically as a VIP transport. This version used a five-blade rotor instead of four to reduce vibration. It also featured blister perspex cockpit doors and a sliding cabin door. The fifth prototype served as the final model for mass production in the passenger market.
There are several different variants of the Mi-8 family, each with specific features. The Mi-17 is a common export version of the aircraft. While they look similar, there are three main ways to tell them apart. First, the Mi-8 has its tail rotor on the right side, while the Mi-17 has its on the left. Second, the Mi-8 has circular exhausts, but the Mi-17 has oval exhausts. Third, the Mi-17 includes dust shields in front of the engine air intakes and improved armor plating for the crew.

One Mi-8 was lost in Finland in 1982 after it sank through ice during a landing. In Georgia, the helicopters were used by both sides during the War in Abkhazia from 1992 to 1993. The aircraft has also been used by the United Nations in South Sudan. During the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s, the Mi-8 was a primary aircraft used by the Soviet Union. Its rugged construction made it easier to maintain and operate in difficult field conditions.
The helicopter has also been used during major industrial and humanitarian crises. In 1986, Mi-8 helicopters were used following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. They were used to drop over 5,000 metric tons of sand, lead, clay, and boron into the No. 4 reactor to extinguish the fire. This mission was very dangerous, and many helicopters were severely irradiated. Some were eventually abandoned in a "machines cemetery" near the site.
