In 1919, Rhee took on leadership roles in exile. Following the March First Movement, he became a leader in the Korean Provisional Government in Shanghai. He served as its acting president for a period between 1920 and 1921. However, he faced internal conflicts within the government. In 1925, he was impeached and removed from his position in Shanghai. He was accused of misusing his power. Despite this, he continued his activism through the Korean Commission to America and Europe. He even wrote a book called "Japan Inside Out" in 1941.

In 1948, Rhee returned to a changing Korea. He was elected the first president by the National Assembly.

His presidency included the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. This war began when North Korea invaded South Korea. Rhee held very strong anti-communist views. He also maintained a very close relationship with the United States. During the war, he refused to sign the armistice agreement. He wanted to reunite the Korean peninsula by force. After the war, the South Korean economy relied heavily on US aid.

Toward the end of his rule, Rhee faced intense opposition. He attempted to change the constitution to remove term limits. This caused many people to protest against him. In 1960, a controversial election took place. His opponent, Chough Pyung-ok, died of cancer before the vote. After the election, people claimed the results were rigged. This led to the April Revolution, which was led by students. Police shot demonstrators in Masan during these protests. This scandal forced Rhee to resign from the presidency on April 26, 1960.

After resigning, Rhee left South Korea for Hawaii. He stayed in Honolulu for the rest of his life. He claimed he went there for medical treatment rather than exile. He died from a stroke in 1965. His presidency marked the beginning of the First Republic of Korea. His actions and the protests against him led to the start of the Second Republic. His life remains a complex part of how modern Korea was formed.
