She works across many disciplines in the film and music industries. Chang is an actress, a singer, a director, a screenwriter, and a producer. A screenwriter writes the scripts, which are the written stories for films. A producer manages the various parts of film production. Chang has also worked as a head producer for New Cinema City in Taiwan. Her career is noted for its immense longevity and variety. Critics have compared her endurance to that of a sequoia tree. This means she has remained a major star for many decades.

Chang's approach to filmmaking is unique and hands-on. She did not attend a formal film school to learn her craft. Instead, she gained her education directly on movie sets. This practical learning shaped her view on cinematic tools. She believes that animation and special effects should not be limited to science-fiction. She enjoys using these technical tools within dramatic stories. In her acting career, she often performs her own stunts. This was especially true in the four-part film series titled Aces Go Places. She has also expressed that the Hong Kong film industry has historically been male-dominated. She noted that few male filmmakers write scripts specifically for women.

Chang's artistic work spans several distinct stages and formats. She began her career in radio as a DJ at age 16. She transitioned to acting in 1973 with the film The Tattooed Dragon. Beyond film, she is a successful singer. Her music is popular in karaoke settings, specifically her song "The Cost of Love." She also performs in theatre productions. After a 20-year break from the stage, she returned in 2008. She appeared in the production Design For Living, which ran into 2009. This return was motivated by an invitation from a director.

Her history is marked by significant professional milestones. Born in Chiayi, Taiwan, in 1953, she entered the film industry at age 18. In the 1980s, she reached new heights as a director. Her second film, Passion, was a major success. She wrote, directed, and starred in this film. For her work on Passion, she won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress. Throughout her life, she has moved between acting, directing, and producing. This allows her to explore different perspectives, such as the "gentler side of men" in her writing.

Chang has received massive recognition through numerous awards and honors. She holds the record for the most nominations for Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards. She has earned ten nominations and two wins in this category. Her films have been showcased at prestigious global events. These include the BFI London Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. At the 49th Toronto International Film Festival, she received an honorable mention from the Platform Prize jury. This was the first time in the award's history that an individual performer was recognized. She also earned a Best Leading Actress nomination at the 61st Golden Horse Awards.

Her influence extends to the leadership of the global film community. In 1992, she served as a jury member at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival. She joined the board of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society as vice-chair in 2010. In June 2018, she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. That same year, she served as a jury member for the 75th Venice International Film Festival. These roles show her respect within the highest levels of international cinema.

Beyond the arts, Chang is dedicated to humanitarian work. She is a life-long volunteer for World Vision International. This organization focuses on humanitarian aid, development, and advocacy. Chang has even created advertisements to promote the company. She is also an advocate for the "30 Hour Famine," which is sponsored by World Vision. Even when facing personal difficulties, such as the kidnapping of her son Oscar in 2000, she maintains a resilient attitude. She believes that moving forward is a necessary choice in life.
