language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Swedish is a North Germanic language within the Indo-European family. It is spoken by at least 10 million native speakers. This makes it the fourth most spoken Germanic language in the world. It is also the most spoken language of its type in the Nordic countries. Most Swedish speakers live in Sweden, but many also live in Finland. In Finland, Swedish is a co-official language. It is also the most common second language spoken there.

Linguists classify Swedish as part of the East Scandinavian group. This group includes Danish. This classification separates them from West Scandinavian languages like Norwegian, Icelandic, and Faroese. However, some recent studies use a different method. They divide North Germanic languages into Insular Scandinavian and Continental Scandinavian. In this view, Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian are all Continental Scandinavian. This is because they share a high degree of mutual intelligibility. They are often seen as a dialect continuum. This means they are closely related languages that flow into one another.

Despite their closeness, these languages are distinct. Sweden and Denmark had intense rivalries for centuries. They fought many wars between the 16th and 18th centuries. Later, nationalist ideas in the 19th and 20th centuries helped separate them further. Because of this history, the languages have different dictionaries and grammars. They also use different orthographies, which are systems of spelling. Even today, some dialects on the borders of Norway and Sweden act as intermediate dialects. They sit between the national standards of both countries.

The roots of Swedish go back to the Viking Age. In the 8th century, Proto-Norse evolved into Old Norse. This language split into two main dialects. Old West Norse was spoken in Norway, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands. Old East Norse was spoken in Denmark and Sweden. The Swedish version was known as Runic Swedish. At this time, people used the Younger Futhark alphabet. This alphabet had only 16 letters. Because it was so small, one rune had to represent many sounds. For example, the 'u' rune stood for u, o, ø, and y.

As the Middle Ages progressed, the language changed significantly. Around 1225, the Västgöta Law was likely compiled. This is one of the earliest Swedish texts written in the Latin script. During this era, the language was much more complex. It used a four-case system for nouns and adjectives. It also had three genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter. The Christian church introduced many Greek and Latin loanwords. Later, the Hanseatic League brought Middle Low German influence. Many German immigrants moved to Sweden for trade. They brought new words for administration, trade, and warfare. They even introduced some grammatical suffixes and conjunctions.

A major turning point occurred during the 16th century. The printing press and the Reformation changed how people read. King Gustav Vasa ordered a Swedish translation of the Bible. The full translation, known as the Gustav Vasa Bible, was published in 1541. This work was very influential for many centuries. It helped create a consistent way to spell the language. It also established the use of the vowels å, ä, and ö. It even chose specific spellings, like 'ck' instead of 'kk', to distinguish Swedish from Danish. This helped set a standard for the whole nation.

Modern Swedish, or 'Nysvenska,' began in the late 19th century. This period brought a democratization of the language. The written form became less formal and closer to spoken speech. The growth of state schools helped create 'Book Swedish.' This was a standardized version used in official settings. While regional dialects still exist due to old geographic isolation, the written language is now uniform. This allows people from different parts of Sweden to communicate easily. You might still see different versions of a word on a single sign.
