The city serves as the major port for the nation. It sits on the southeast coast of Viti Levu island. This island is part of the Fiji archipelago. Suva is located in the Rewa Province within the Central Division. The city is the center of Fiji's largest metropolitan area. This area includes many independent suburbs.

Geographically, Suva sits on a hilly peninsula. It is located between Laucala Bay and Suva Harbour.

The mountains to the north and west play a major role in the local weather. These mountains catch the southeast trade winds. This process produces moist conditions throughout the entire year. Because of this, Suva has a tropical rainforest climate. This classification means the city sees a high amount of precipitation. There is no true dry season in Suva. Every month has an average rainfall of at least 200 millimetres. The heaviest rainfall occurs between November and May. The driest month is July, which averages 250 millimetres.

Suva's landscape is unique because of its coastline. Although the city is almost surrounded by sea, it has no immediate beaches. The coast is lined with mangroves instead. These are salt-tolerant trees and shrubs that grow in coastal wetlands. The nearest beach is 40 kilometres away at Pacific Harbour. Much of the city centre is built on reclaimed mangrove swampland. This includes the area where the Parliament buildings are located.

The city is divided into five distinct wards. The Central ward contains the central business district. Tamavua and Extension are mostly residential areas. Samabula is a mix of residential, industrial, and commercial zones. Muanikau is an urban ward that includes large sporting venues.

History shows how Suva grew from a small village into a capital. In 1868, a Bauan chieftain named Seru Epenisa Cakobau granted land to the Polynesia Company. This company wanted to start a cotton farming industry. However, the land and climate were not suitable for cotton. In 1874, the Fiji Islands were ceded to the United Kingdom. The colonial authorities decided to move the capital from Levuka to Suva in 1877. Levuka was located between a steep mountain and the sea. This made it very difficult for the town to expand. Colonel F. E. Pratt designed the new capital. He was a Surveyor-General for the Royal Engineers. The administration officially transferred to Suva in 1882. Suva was later designated as Fiji's first official city in 1952.

Today, Suva is a massive economic and political hub. It is often called the "New York of the Pacific."

This represents over one-third of the entire nation's population. The economy is supported by international shipping at Kings Wharf.
