geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Surgut is a major industrial city in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug of Russia. It sits directly on the banks of the Ob River. This city is unique because it is larger than many regional capitals. It leads its federal subject in population, economic activity, and tourist traffic. Surgut is often called "The Oil Capital of Russia" due to its massive energy industry. It serves as a vital hub for the country's natural resources.

The city's environment is defined by a continental subarctic climate. This means the region experiences very long and frigid winters. The summers are short but can be quite warm. Precipitation patterns change with the seasons. From May to October, rain is more frequent. During the winter, snow becomes much more common. The annual snow cover in Surgut is thicker than in areas further east in Siberia. This happens because of moisture from humid European winters reaching across the Ural Mountains.

Surgut has a long history of development in Siberia. It was founded in 1594 by the order of Tsar Feodor I. At that time, it was a small wooden fortress. The fortification sat on a cape for defense. This location made it impossible to approach unnoticed from the river or land. The fortress had two gates and five towers. One of these towers included a carriageway. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it became a center for Russian development in the region. By 1897, the population had grown to 1,100 people.

The city underwent rapid urbanization during the 1960s. This growth was driven by the discovery of oil and gas. In 1965, the settlement was officially granted town status. Today, the economy is heavily tied to oil production and natural gas processing. Major companies like Surgutneftegaz and Surgutgazprom operate here. The city also hosts the largest port on the Ob River. It is a massive road and railway junction in northwest Siberia. The Surgut Bridge is a famous landmark. It is the world's longest one-tower cable-stayed bridge.

Energy production is a cornerstone of the local economy. Surgut is home to two of the world's most powerful power plants. These are the SDPP-1 and SDPP-2. Together, they produce over 7,200 megawatts of electricity. This provides cheap power to most of the region. The Surgut-2 Power Station is particularly significant. It is the second-largest gas-fired power station in the world. Many factories also exist to process gas, condensate, and motor fuel. In 2013, the volume of shipped goods and services from large producers reached 100.7 billion rubles.
