Surena was a famous general from the Parthian Empire. He lived during the 1st century BC. He was the leader of a group called the House of Suren.

This man was very important to his people. Some writers say he was almost as powerful as a king. He was known for his great courage and his skill in battle. His name means "the heroic one." People in Iran and Armenia still use the name Suren today.

Surena was a very wealthy and distinguished man. A writer named Plutarch described him many years later. Plutarch said Surena was the finest Parthian of his time. He was also very tall and handsome. He had a face that was painted and hair parted in a special way. He traveled with a large group of people that looked like a royal court. Because he was so rich, he had many people working for him in his army.

Surena helped the Parthian king, Orodes II, keep his throne. In 54 BC, he fought in a battle for the city of Seleucia. This fight helped Orodes II stay in power. Later, in 53 BC, the Romans moved toward Parthian lands. King Orodes II sent his cavalry units under Surena to stop them. The Roman leader was a man named Marcus Licinius Crassus. This set the stage for a very famous fight.

The two armies met at the Battle of Carrhae. This place is in modern-day Turkey. The Roman army was much larger than the Parthian army. However, Surena used clever tactics to win. He lured the Romans out into the middle of the desert. His troops used their equipment well to defeat the invaders. It was one of the biggest defeats in Roman history. The battle was very hard for the Romans. Plutarch wrote that 20,000 Romans died and 10,000 were taken as prisoners.

Even though the Parthians won, they did not gain new land. The victory did not change the balance of power between the two empires. After the battle, King Orodes II had Surena killed. The king likely felt that Surena was becoming too much of a threat. Surena's story has lived on for a long time. A French writer named Pierre Corneille even wrote a play about him. His life remains a big part of history.
