Every great story needs more than one person.

The main star is called the protagonist. But other people live in that same world. These people are called supporting characters. They are not the main focus of the story. However, they are very important to the plot. They are much more than just tiny cameos. They have their own feelings and desires. They also have their own complex backstories. This adds layers and depth to the whole tale.

Supporting characters work in many different ways. Some act as a best friend or a sidekick. Others might be a love interest or a caregiver. A character might even provide comic relief to make people laugh. Each one has a role to play. They help the protagonist reach a goal. They also help the story move forward. Sometimes, they even cause conflict. This conflict makes the story more exciting for the reader.

We can group these characters into three main types. The first type is called a supporter. Supporters include close friends and caregivers. They offer aid and companionship to the hero. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are famous supporters. They help the hero in the Harry Potter series. Supporters can also be targets for the bad guys. This happens to show what the hero is like.

The second type is the antagonist. An antagonist is the opposite of the protagonist. They create the main conflict in the story. They challenge the hero to do better. This helps the hero learn an important lesson. The Joker is a well-known antagonist in Batman. The third type is called an informant. Informants are mentors, guides, or messengers. Yoda in Star Wars is a great example. He provides wisdom and direction when the hero is lost.

These characters can change how we see stories. In television, they may appear in many episodes. They might show up in more than half of a season. Sometimes, the audience falls in love with them. If people like them enough, they get a spin-off. A spin-off is a new show just for them. This happens often in comic books and TV series. Supporting characters help the hero grow as a person. They make the world of the story feel real.
