Some stores even sell clothes or toys. Most supermarkets are built on one level. They are often near homes to make shopping easy.

Long ago, shopping was very different. Customers went to small corner stores. You could not pick your own food. Instead, you told a clerk what you wanted. The clerk would get it from behind a counter.

People also had to argue about prices. This was called haggling.

Modern supermarkets changed how we buy things. In 1930, Michael J. Cullen opened King Kullen.

Supermarkets buy goods in huge amounts. This helps them keep prices low for everyone. They use shopping carts to help people carry items.
