He is best known for his military leadership during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. Because of his tactical success, he earned the nickname "Rommel of the East." Sun was a highly educated officer who combined technical knowledge with military strategy. His career is a complex story of battlefield brilliance and political struggle.

Sun's early life was defined by academic and athletic excellence. Born in 1900 in Jinniu, Anhui, he initially pursued a career in engineering. He studied civil engineering at Tsinghua University, where he was also a star basketball player. In 1921, he led his team to a gold medal at the Far Eastern Championship Games.

He later moved to the United States to study at Purdue University. After graduating in 1924, he worked briefly as an engineer in Chicago. However, his desire to serve his divided nation led him to the Virginia Military Institute. He graduated from VMI in 1927 and studied military organization in Europe and Japan.

Sun's military career began in earnest when he organized the National Salt Gabelle Brigade. He trained these troops in Duyun, Guizhou, to be highly disciplined and well-equipped. These regiments eventually became the New 38th Division. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Sun led his troops in the 1937 Battle of Shanghai. He was badly wounded by mine fragments during this conflict. After recovering, he returned to the front to lead his men. His New 1st Army became so respected that it was called the "Best Army under heaven."

In the Burma campaign, Sun demonstrated exceptional command skills. He led the 113th Regiment through difficult terrain to relieve 7,000 British forces at the Battle of Yenangyaung. During this operation, he commanded British artillery and tanks from the United Kingdom. For his success, King George VI named him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Later, Sun's division became part of the "X Force." This was a Chinese force under the American command of Joseph Stilwell. Stilwell considered Sun the most capable Chinese field commander of the entire war.

In 1945, General Dwight D. Eisenhower invited Sun to tour the battlefields of Europe.

The end of World War II brought the Chinese Civil War. Sun's New 1st Army was deployed to Manchuria to fight the People's Liberation Army (PLA). In May 1946, his troops won the Battle of Siping, a key railroad junction. The PLA even remarked that they were not afraid of the Nationalist government as long as they did not have to fight Sun's New 1st Army. Despite these victories, Sun faced political difficulties. Leaders like Du Yuming accused him of insubordination. Some officials distrusted Sun because of his American education and perceived lack of personal loyalty to the regime.

After the Nationalist government retreated to Taiwan, Sun held several important roles. In 1950, he was named commander-in-chief of the Republic of China Army. He also served as the commander of the Taiwan Defense Command. However, political tensions grew between Sun and the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek. There were rumors that the CIA wanted to replace Chiang with Sun. In 1955, Sun was officially relieved of his duties. He was charged with conspiracy and placed under house arrest.

He remained in this restricted state until after the death of Chiang Ching-kuo in 1988. Sun died in 1990 at the age of 89 from pneumonia and sepsis. His death occurred at home, but his funeral was held with full military honors.
