Summation

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever had to add up a very long list of numbers? In math, this process is called summation. When you find the total of a sequence of numbers, that total is called the sum. The individual numbers you are adding together are called addends or summands. Summation is not just for simple numbers, though. You can also sum different kinds of mathematical objects like vectors or matrices. Even adding up functions or polynomials is a type of summation. It is a way to bring many parts together into one single value.

Sometimes, writing out every single number in a long list is too much work. To save space, mathematicians use a special shortcut called sigma notation. This uses a large Greek letter called sigma, which looks like a big E. The symbol tells you exactly where to start and where to stop. The bottom part of the symbol shows the lower bound, or the starting number. The top part shows the upper bound, or the ending number. An index, which is a variable like i or k, keeps track of each step. It starts at the bottom value and grows by one each time until it reaches the top.

People have been looking for ways to write these sums for a long time. In 1675, a man named Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz wrote a letter to Henry Oldenburg. He suggested using an S-shaped symbol to mark the sum of differentials. Later, the symbol was renamed to represent an integral. In 1755, Leonhard Euler used the sigma symbol in his work called Institutiones calculi differentialis. Other famous mathematicians used it too, such as Lagrange in 1772. By 1829, people like Fourier and C. G. J. Jacobi were also using sigma notation in their math.

There are a few special rules that make summation work correctly. If you have a list with only one number, the sum is just that number. If you have an empty sequence with no numbers at all, the sum is zero. This is called an empty sum, and zero is used because it does not change an addition. You can also perform an algebraic sum. This is a sum that includes both positive and negative signs. In an algebraic sum, you add the positive numbers and subtract the negative ones.

Summation helps us understand patterns in the world around us. For example, you can find the sum of the first 100 natural numbers very quickly. There are special formulas that can give you a direct answer without adding every single step. These are called closed-form expressions. Summation is also linked to other math ideas, like the product of a sequence. While summation uses the sigma symbol, multiplying a sequence uses a different Greek letter called pi. Both tools help mathematicians organize and solve huge problems with ease.
