You can put groups together to find a total. This is called adding. When you add a long list of numbers, it is called summation.

Sometimes the numbers follow a pattern. You might add the first 100 natural numbers. Writing them all out takes a long time. To save space, math uses a special sign. This sign is a large Greek letter called sigma. It looks like a big E.

This sigma symbol is a shortcut. It tells you where to start adding. It also tells you where to stop. The numbers you add are called addends. The final total is called the sum.

There are a few special rules for sums. If you have no numbers to add, the sum is zero. If you only have one number, the sum is just that number. You can also add numbers with plus or minus signs. This is called an algebraic sum. In this way, some numbers are added while others are taken away.

Math experts have used these signs for a long time. Leonhard Euler used the sigma symbol in 1755. Many people use it today to write long sums quickly.
