The Sultanate of Ternate was a powerful maritime state in eastern Indonesia. Originally, it was known as the Kingdom of Gapi. It grew from four small villages led by clan leaders called Momole. These villages traded valuable spices with Arab, Malay, and Chinese merchants. This lucrative trade attracted pirates to the region. To protect their wealth, a stronger organized kingdom emerged.

Ternate became a global center for the production of cloves. Cloves are a highly valued spice that grew on the islands. Along with the neighboring Sultanate of Tidore, Ternate controlled the world's supply. This monopoly made the sultans incredibly wealthy and influential. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Ternate was a major regional power. The kingdom's influence even reached parts of the southern Philippines.

The kingdom underwent a major religious transformation in the late 15th century. While Islamic influence had been present since the late 14th century, it was initially limited to the ruling family. In 1465, King Marhum became the first ruler to embrace Islam. His son, Zainal Abidin, who ruled from 1486 to 1500, enacted Islamic Law. This transition officially changed the kingdom from a monarchy into an Islamic Sultanate. The traditional title of Kolano was replaced by the title of Sultan.

Ternate reached its Golden Age under Sultan Baabullah from 1570 to 1583. During this period, the sultanate's reach was vast. It held influence over much of eastern Sulawesi and the Ambon and Seram areas. The empire also extended to Timor island and the Papuan Islands. Ternate frequently competed with the Sultanate of Tidore for control of these territories. This rivalry between Ternate and Tidore is a dominant theme in Maluku history.

European arrival changed the political landscape of the islands. In 1512, Sultan Bayan Sirrullah brought Portuguese explorers to Ternate. The Portuguese were allowed to build a fort called Kastella in 1522. However, relations were strained by the behavior of the Portuguese and attempts at Christianization. After the Portuguese murdered Sultan Hairun, the Ternatans fought back. They conducted a five-year siege and expelled the Portuguese in 1575. Later, Spanish forces captured a Portuguese fort in 1606 and deported the Sultan to Manila.

The Dutch arrived in 1607 and became key allies for the Ternatans. The Dutch helped the sultanate fight against the Spanish and Tidore. Under Sultan Hamzah, who ruled from 1627 to 1648, the territory expanded again. However, the Dutch East India Company, or VOC, slowly gained more control. By 1683, a treaty forced Ternate to become a vassal of the Dutch. This meant the sultanate was no longer an equal power. The spice trade declined in the 19th century, reducing the region's importance to the Dutch.

Formal political power ended when the Dutch annexed the sultanate in 1914. This followed the exile of Sultan Haji Muhammad Usman, who had tried to oppose Dutch rule. Although the traditional kingdom ended, the sultanate still exists as a cultural institution. The royal family continues to uphold many old traditions today. The social structure was historically based on the soa, which were territorial units of descent groups. These groups, such as the Fala Raha, helped organize the society around the Sultan's palace.
