Sulid birds are a special family of seabirds. They include the gannets and the boobies.

These medium-to-large birds live near the coast. They are famous for how they hunt for food. They dive from high in the air into the sea.

This way of hunting is called plunge-diving. They look for fish and other small sea creatures. Because they dive so fast, their bodies are shaped like torpedoes. This shape helps them move through water with very little drag.

To dive well, these birds have many helpful tools. Their wings are long, narrow, and pointed. Their flight muscles are actually quite small. This is a trade-off to keep their bodies slim for diving.

They have stout legs and webbed feet. In some species, the webs are brightly colored. These colors are used during courtship displays to find a mate. Their bills are long and pointed with saw-like edges. To keep water out of their noses while diving, their nostrils are located inside the bill. Their eyes are also angled forward. This gives them a wide field of vision to see prey underwater.

Scientists have studied how these birds are related for a long time. Older books used to put all sulids in one group called Sula. Now, we know there are three different groups. There are the true boobies, which are the genus Sula. There are the gannets, which are the genus Morus.

There is also Abbott's booby, which belongs to its own group called Papasula. This bird is very ancient and stands apart from the others.

Scientists use DNA and physical traits to tell these groups apart. This helps us understand the history of these amazing birds.

There are 10 different species in the sulid family.

They live in many different places around the world. For example, the Northern gannet lives in Western Europe and North America. The Blue-footed booby lives in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Some birds, like the Masked booby, live in tropical oceans. The history of these birds goes back a very long time. Fossil evidence shows their lineage started around 50 million years ago.

Some prehistoric birds, like Masillastega, lived a long time ago in places like Germany.

Sulids live in large groups called colonies to raise their young.

Most species lay two eggs that are white, blue, or pink. Both the mothers and fathers help keep the eggs warm. They do not have a special warm patch on their bellies. Instead, they use their warm, blood-filled feet to cover the eggs. The eggs stay under the webbed feet for 42 to 55 days.

When the chicks hatch, they are naked and need lots of care. Parents feed them by letting the chicks take food from their mouths. This life in a colony helps the birds stay safe and find mates.
