Sulfur trioxide

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sulfur trioxide is a very important chemical compound. It has the formula SO3. This substance is a key part of many industrial processes. It is used to create sulfuric acid through the contact process. It also helps make surfactants, which are used in soaps. Most of it is used right away in factories. This is because it is very hard to store safely.

This chemical can exist in several different forms. It can be a gas, a liquid, or a solid. In its gas form, it is a main cause of acid rain. The solid forms are quite complex. There are at least three different types of solid sulfur trioxide. One type is a cyclic trimer, which is a group of three molecules.

Another type is a polymer, which is a long chain of molecules. These forms can change into each other if water is present.

Making sulfur trioxide in a factory is a big job. First, workers burn sulfur or iron pyrite to make sulfur dioxide. Then, they add oxygen to that gas. This happens at temperatures between 400 and 600 degrees Celsius. A catalyst is used to help this reaction happen faster. A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a change. Most factories use vanadium pentoxide for this task. Some use platinum, but it is too expensive for most uses.

Scientists can also make it in a laboratory. One way is by using sodium bisulfate. This is a two-step process involving heat. First, they heat it to 315 degrees Celsius to make sodium pyrosulfate. Then, they heat it to 460 degrees Celsius to get the sulfur trioxide. Another method uses tin tetrachloride and sulfuric acid. This method can produce a very pure trimer. It is safer for glass tools because it uses lower temperatures.

Sulfur trioxide is a very reactive substance. It is a strong oxidant, which means it can cause other things to burn. It is also very corrosive. If it touches water, it turns into sulfuric acid very quickly. This reaction creates a lot of heat. This heat can be strong enough to set wood or cotton on fire. It can even shatter glass in a sudden "alpha explosion."
