Sujeo

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sujeo is a special set for eating Korean food. The name comes from two words. One word means spoon. The other word means chopsticks.

This set is made of metal. Most sets use stainless steel. The chopsticks have an oval shape. The spoon has a long handle. You can use both at once. This is a new way to eat faster. But do not hold both in one hand. This is not polite, especially with elders.

There are rules for how to use them. You can put sticks on a rest. You can also put them on the table. But never stick them upright in food. This looks like food for the dead. It is a way to honor ancestors at a grave. Doing this can bring bad luck.

People often give sujeo as gifts. They use pretty fabric cases. These cases have embroidery on them. The patterns show symbols for a long life. People often give these at weddings. Today, you can also buy them as souvenirs.
