The name Sugarloaf comes from a very old shape. In the 16th century, Portuguese traders moved much sugar. They put sugar into clay molds to move it on ships. These molds had a cone shape. The mountain looked just like those blocks of sugar. Because of this, people gave it a nickname. Now, people use that name for other rock shapes too.

Getting to the top is a fun way to see the city. You can ride in a glass-walled cable car. These cars are called a bondinho. They can hold 65 people at once. The cars move every 20 minutes. You must take two different cars to reach the summit. The first car goes up to Morro da Urca. The second car takes you to the very top of Sugarloaf.

A man named Augusto Ferreira Ramos had a big idea. In 1907, he wanted to link the hills through the air. He started the work in 1910. Brazilian workers built the project using parts from Germany. They had to lift everything using steel cables. The first cableway opened in 1912. It was the first in Brazil. The first cars were made of coated wood.
