Style (visual arts)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

In the visual arts, style is a distinctive manner of creation. It is the recognizable way an artist performs an act or makes an artifact.

This visual appearance allows experts to group works into related categories. Style connects a single piece to other works by the same artist. It also links works to a specific period, training, location, or art movement. Historians use style as a primary tool to classify and shape the history of art.

Style functions through several different layers of classification. One layer is the general style of a country or a cultural group. Another layer involves a specific group of artists or an art movement. There is also the individual style of a single artist within a larger group.

Within these categories, scholars often divide styles into early, middle, or late stages. For some artists, these transitions are easy to see. For others, the changes are much more subtle.

Artistic style is a dynamic and changing force. It rarely stays the same for long periods. The speed of change varies greatly across human history. Prehistoric art and Ancient Egyptian art show very slow stylistic development. In contrast, Modern art styles can change with great rapidity.

Style often evolves through a series of jumps. This means a period of sudden change is often followed by a period of slower development.

Many stylistic names were invented by historians long after the art was made. The original artists often would not have recognized these labels. Some famous names actually began as terms of derision, or insults. This includes the terms Gothic, Baroque, and Rococo.

However, some movements are named by the artists themselves. Cubism is an example of a style that a few artists consciously identified. While the word likely began with critics, the painters quickly accepted it.

Historically, the study of style has undergone major shifts. During the Renaissance, Giorgio Vasari wrote about the development of Italian painting. He focused on the Florentine style of line-based drawing. He contrasted this with the Venetian focus on color.

Later, Johann Joachim Winckelmann analyzed Greek classical art in 1764. Georg Hegel also contributed by suggesting that every historical period has a typical style. This idea is sometimes linked to the concept of the spirit of the time.

In architecture, style is often linked to technical progress. The discovery of new materials can trigger a change in how buildings look. For example, the Gothic rib vault changed architectural styles. Modern construction uses metal and reinforced concrete to create new looks.

Scholars debate if style changes because of these new tools or because of social and economic factors. This debate looks at how patronage and the conditions of the artist influence the final work.

Today, the role of style in art history is viewed differently. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, style was the most important factor for scholars. By the middle of the 20th century, this view began to fade. Some historians even feel that using style labels can be a depressing task.

Despite these criticisms, style remains essential for identifying individual artists. This process, known as attribution, is vital for the art market. It helps determine the value of a work based on the artist's unique signature style.
