A street is a public thoroughfare located in a city, town, or village.

These spaces are typically lined with buildings on one or both sides. While a street can be a simple patch of dirt, most use hard, durable surfaces. These surfaces include tarmac, concrete, cobblestone, or brick. Urban planners make a clear distinction between roads and streets. A road's primary function is transportation. In contrast, a street is designed to facilitate public interaction and social activity.

One of the most important roles of a street is circulation. Circulation refers to the movement of people and goods throughout an urban area. To maintain order, many streets use segregation to separate different types of traffic. This often involves a central roadway for motorists and pavements for pedestrians.

In some countries, like Japan and India, streets also include ditches for wastewater and rainfall runoff. Some theorists, such as Le Corbusier, believed strict segregation was necessary for modern social order. This led to ideas for "vertical streets" where different users occupy separate levels. While comprehensive vertical cities were not built, we see this applied in parts of cities. Examples include the underground malls near Tokyo Station and the pedestrian skyway networks in Minneapolis and Calgary.

Streets can be categorized by their size and activity levels. Main streets are usually broad and experience high levels of commerce and public interaction. They allow vehicles to travel longer distances. Side streets are the opposite, acting as quieter, residential areas. These are often used for parking rather than through traffic. Some streets fall into a middle category known as a "stroad." A stroad is a street-road combination that must support heavy through traffic.

The history of the word street is tied to the concept of paving. It originates from the Latin term "via strata," which means a paved road. This is also related to the words stratum and stratification. The first recorded use of the term referring to a road was by Eutropius. The ancient Greeks used the word "stratos," meaning army, because they built roads to move their military forces. In Britain, Old English applied the term to Roman roads like Watling Street or Ermine Street. Over time, the word also described villages that grew along these roads. These settlements often took the name Stretton.

Vehicular movement on a street follows specific rules and layouts. A street can be one-way, where traffic moves in a single direction, or two-way. One-way streets are identified by signs and arrows. Two-way streets are usually wide enough for at least two lanes. A center line often separates traffic moving in opposite directions. Some streets also use a median strip to divide these lanes. For parking, many side streets provide extra width for parallel parking. In business areas, drivers might use parking meters to pay for a limited time.

Pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure is vital for a healthy street. Pavements, or sidewalks, allow neighbors to meet and encourage window shopping. Studies show that shops on streets with sidewalks often attract more customers. Accessibility is a key part of modern design. Features like curb ramps and tactile paving help people with disabilities.

Bicycles are also legal users of the street. Some cities provide dedicated bicycle lanes to separate cyclists from cars. In the Netherlands, designers use "Protected Bicycle Paths" that are totally separate from motor traffic. This design is considered very safe for cyclists.

Beyond movement, streets serve as essential corridors for urban utilities. They house electric power lines, telephone cables, and fiber optic lines. They also carry natural gas lines and sanitary sewers. Even the landscaping, such as a road verge of grass or trees, serves a purpose. These green strips can be used for beautification or to control stormwater. Streets also provide identity to a location. Famous streets like Bourbon Street in New Orleans or Madison Avenue in New York define the culture of their neighborhoods.
