Engineering is the creative application of science and mathematics to solve complex problems. It involves designing and developing structures, machines, or manufacturing processes. Engineers do not just build things; they aim to improve systems and increase productivity. They must ensure that every design is efficient and safe for people and property. This practice can involve forecasting how a machine will behave under specific conditions. By using the engineering design process, professionals turn scientific principles into working technology.

The engineering process relies on finding optimal solutions within specific constraints. Constraints are the limits or rules that a designer must follow. These might include budgets, available materials, or physical space. Before a product is manufactured, engineers use testing and simulations. A simulation allows them to model how a design will work in the real world. If a product fails after it is used, experts perform forensic engineering. This specialized field studies the failure to determine exactly what went wrong. This helps engineers find a fix and prevent future mistakes.

Modern engineering is divided into many specialized subfields. The traditional disciplines include civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering. Civil engineering focuses on infrastructure like bridges, canals, and harbors. Mechanical engineering deals with machinery and vehicles. Electrical engineering covers electronics and energy systems. Chemical engineering applies science to manufacturing and new materials. Today, these fields often overlap to create advanced technologies. Engineers might work on everything from massive offshore platforms to tiny microchips.

Humanity has practiced engineering since ancient times using simple machines. These six classic machines include the wedge, the lever, and the wheel and axle. They also include the pulley, the inclined plane, and the screw. In Mesopotamia, the wheel was invented during the 5th millennium BC. The lever appeared about 5,000 years ago in the Near East. Ancient Egyptians used the wedge, lever, and inclined plane to build the Great Pyramid of Giza. Imhotep is recorded as the earliest civil engineer known by name. He supervised the construction of the Step Pyramid at Saqqara around 2630 BC.

As civilizations grew, engineering became more sophisticated. The Romans built massive aqueducts and roads like the Via Appia. In the Islamic Golden Age, engineers developed wind-powered machines like windmills. During the 9th century, the Banu Musa brothers created programmable musical instruments. In 1206, Al-Jazari invented programmable automata, which were early forms of robots. The Industrial Revolution later transformed engineering into a scientific profession. The invention of the steam engine provided much more power than animals could provide. This shift led to the development of mechanical propulsion for ships and railways.

John Smeaton was a key figure during the rise of modern engineering. He is often called the "father" of civil engineering. Smeaton was an English engineer who designed bridges, canals, and lighthouses. He spent seven years experimenting with water wheels to increase their efficiency. He also pioneered the use of hydraulic lime, a mortar that sets under water. This work helped lead to the eventual invention of Portland cement. His ability to combine physics with practical construction helped define the profession.

Today, engineering is a massive global endeavor supported by many systems. Large projects are often funded by governments, companies, or multiple investors. Because of this, engineers must understand economics and business practices. They also follow a strict code of ethics. This code requires them to maintain honesty and integrity. Above all, engineers are dedicated to public safety and welfare. Their work connects many fields, from aerospace to medicine.
