Strategy

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A strategy is a big plan used to reach long-term goals. It is very helpful when the future is not certain. Most people and groups have limited resources to use. Strategy helps them decide how to use those resources well. It involves setting goals and picking the best actions to reach them. A strategy explains how your means will achieve your ends.

Strategy has a very long history. The word comes from a Greek word about leading troops. In the 6th century, people in the Eastern Roman Empire used it for military tasks. This included things like logistics and siegecraft. By the 20th century, it meant using force to reach political goals. One famous book is The Art of War by Sun Tzu. It was written around 500 B.C.

Military leaders have many ideas about strategy. Carl von Clausewitz said strategy uses battles to end a war. B. H. Liddell Hart thought strategy was about using military power to meet political aims. Andrew Wilson said it turns political goals into military action. Lawrence Freedman even called it the art of creating power. These thinkers show that politics often guides military moves.

Today, many different groups use strategy. Governments create plans to stop terrorism and keep citizens safe. The United Kingdom uses a strategy called CONTEST. The United States has used several plans, like the 2011 National Strategy for Counterterrorism. Businesses also use strategy to compete with other companies. Alfred Chandler wrote about business strategy in 1962. Michael Porter added his ideas in 1980.

Strategy can be many different things. Henry Mintzberg said it can be a plan or a pattern. It can also be a ploy to outwit a competitor. Some experts say strategy is a way of solving problems. Professor Richard Rumelt says a good strategy has a kernel. This kernel includes a diagnosis of a challenge and a guiding policy. Strategy helps people shape the future with what they have.
