Strategic depth is a way for a country to stay safe. It is the space between a battle and a country's main parts. These main parts include capital cities and large factories. Leaders want these areas to be far from any fight. This gives them more time to act.

In 1941, the Soviet Union used this idea. Germany invaded their land. The Soviet military moved back to stay safe. They moved their factories far to the east. This helped them keep making things for their army.

Some small countries do not have much space. Israel is a very narrow country. Because it is small, leaders worry about being attacked. They try to stay strong in other ways.

In Pakistan, people talk about strategic depth too. Some think Pakistan wants to control Afghanistan to feel safer. Others say Pakistan just wants to be good neighbors. They want a peaceful border to the west. Leaders in Pakistan say they do not try to control their neighbors. They want a stable and friendly relationship instead.
