A strain is an injury to a muscle or a tendon. A tendon is the part that joins muscle to bone.

Strains happen when these parts stretch too far. This often occurs under too much stress. You might move too fast or too hard. You might also do the same move many times. This can cause a small tear or a big tear. Strains often happen in the foot, leg, or back.

You may feel pain or weakness in the area. The spot might also swell or feel bruised. Some strains are acute. This means they happen from a sudden injury. Other strains are chronic. These come from moving the same way for a long time.

There are different levels of injury. A mild strain has very little tearing. A severe strain can make it hard to move. Some tears are so big they are called a rupture.

To help a strain, doctors suggest five steps. We call this RICE. First, protect the area with soft padding. Second, rest to help it heal. Third, use ice to reduce blood flow. Fourth, use compression by wrapping it in a bandage. Fifth, use elevation. This means keeping the injury near the level of your heart.
