Scientists found their bones in Egypt and Morocco. They also found bones in Niger. These crocs lived a very long time ago.
One kind was called Stomatosuchus. A skull of that animal was lost in a war. We only know about it from old notes.
Another kind was called Laganosuchus. We have found more bones of this one. It is fun to learn about old animals.
Stomatosuchidae is a family of old crocodilians. These animals lived a long time ago. They lived during the Late Cretaceous period. 
These crocs had very special heads. Their skulls were platyrostral. This means their heads were very flat and long. Their jaws were shaped like a duck. Their jaws also had a U-shape. They were not as curved as some other crocs.

Sadly, that skull was destroyed during World War II. It was lost during a bombing of the Munich Museum. Because the skull is gone, this animal remains a mystery. 
Some animals look like they belong in this family. For example, a group called Mourasuchus had a similar duck-like head. However, Mourasuchus is not closely related to Stomatosuchidae. It lived much later during the Miocene. Another animal called Aegyptosuchus was once thought to be part of this family. Now, scientists place it in its own group called Aegyptosuchidae. This shows how much we learn from new discoveries. 
Stomatosuchidae is an extinct family of neosuchian crocodylomorphs. These were ancient relatives of modern crocodiles. This family is defined by specific biological relationships. It includes the genus Stomatosuchus. It also includes the genus Laganosuchus. Scientists use specific groups to define this family. They exclude animals like Notosuchus terrestris and Simosuchus clarki. They also exclude Araripesuchus gomesii and Baurusuchus pachecoi. Peirosaurus torminni and Crocodylus niloticus are also not members. This family helps paleontologists understand how ancient reptiles evolved. 
The most striking feature of these animals is their skull shape. Their skulls are described as platyrostral. This means they had very flat and long heads. Their craniums were shaped like a duck's beak. Their jaws also followed a distinct U-shape. This shape is different from the narrow snouts of many other crocodylomorphs. While they look like some other animals, their anatomy is unique. For example, their jaws were less strongly bowed than others. The glenoid, which is the part where the jaw connects, was rounded. We know about Laganosuchus through two different species. One species is Laganosuchus thaumastos. The other is Laganosuchus maghrebensis. These animals lived during the Cenomanian stage. This stage occurred during the Late Cretaceous period. Their fossils have been discovered in three African countries. These include Egypt, Morocco, and Niger. 
Finding fossils of these animals tells us about their history. Laganosuchus fossils come from two specific locations. L. thaumastos was found in the Echkar Formation in Niger. L. maghrebensis was found in the Kem Kem Beds in Morocco. These locations provide important data about the Late Cretaceous environment. The fossils allow scientists to map where these creatures lived. They also show how these animals were spread across North Africa. This helps us reconstruct the ancient world of the Cenomanian stage.
The history of Stomatosuchus is quite tragic for science. A scientist named Ernst Stromer discovered a holotype skull. This skull was found in the Bahariya Formation in Egypt. Stromer described the animal in 1925. Later, Franz Nopcsa wrote about it in 1926. Unfortunately, the original skull no longer exists. It was destroyed during World War II. A bombing at the Munich Museum destroyed the specimen. Because no other material has been found, Stomatosuchus remains enigmatic. This means it is still a mystery to researchers.
Sometimes, animals look similar but are not related. This is a common challenge in paleontology. The animal Mourasuchus is a good example. It had a similar duck-shaped head. However, Mourasuchus is not a stomatosuchid. It is a more derived alligatoroid. It also lived much later during the Miocene. Another animal, Aegyptosuchus, was once thought to be a member of this family. Scientists have since moved it. It now belongs to its own family called Aegyptosuchidae. These changes show how science constantly updates itself.
Studying Stomatosuchidae connects us to the broader study of evolution. It shows how different groups of reptiles adapted to their environments.
