She gained global fame through her work with the rock band Fleetwood Mac. She is also a highly successful solo artist. Nicks is recognized for her unique vocal style and songwriting. Her music has achieved massive commercial success. She has sold over 65 million copies of her music in the United States alone. This includes her work with Fleetwood Mac and her solo albums. Her career is marked by both musical innovation and significant industry honors.

Nicks's musical foundation began in her early childhood. Her grandfather, A.J. Nicks, taught her to sing duets by age four. She grew up in various cities like Phoenix and San Francisco. On her 16th birthday, she received a Goya guitar. This instrument allowed her to write her first song. During her teenage years, she joined a folk rock band called The Changing Times. This group focused on vocal harmonies. Later, she met Lindsey Buckingham at Menlo-Atherton High School. She joined him in harmony while he played "California Dreamin'." This meeting began a long musical and romantic partnership.

After the band Fritz disbanded in 1972, Nicks and Buckingham formed a duo. They recorded demo tapes on a four-track Ampex machine. They released the album *Buckingham Nicks* in 1973. However, the album did not achieve commercial success. The duo was eventually dropped by Polydor Records. During this difficult time, Nicks worked several jobs to survive. She waited tables and cleaned houses. She also spent this period writing many of her most famous songs. She wrote "Rhiannon" after seeing the name in a novel. She wrote "Landslide" while inspired by the scenery in Aspen.

In 1975, Nicks and Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac. This addition changed the band's sound significantly. Their new harmonies added a pop accessibility to their blues-based rock style.
