Steve Bannon

Stephen Kevin Bannon is an American media executive and political strategist. He is well known for his role in modern politics. Bannon worked as the chief strategist for President Donald Trump. He also served as the executive chairman of Breitbart News.

His career has moved through many very different fields. He has worked in the military, banking, film, and science. Today, he is a prominent political figure and podcast host.

Bannon's early life began in Norfolk, Virginia. He was born on November 27, 1953. His father worked as a telephone lineman and a manager. His mother was a homemaker. Bannon attended Benedictine College Preparatory in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from that school in 1971. Later, he attended Virginia Tech. He earned a degree in urban planning in 1976. He also served as the president of the student government there.

Bannon spent several years in the United States Navy. He served as an officer from 1977 to 1983. He worked as a surface warfare officer in the Pacific Fleet. He also worked at the Pentagon. His job involved writing reports about the Navy fleet. In 1980, he was deployed to the Persian Gulf. This was during Operation Eagle Claw. Bannon said this mission changed his political views. He became a strong admirer of Ronald Reagan after this time. He also earned a master's degree from Georgetown University in 1983.

After the Navy, Bannon entered the world of finance. He worked at Goldman Sachs as an investment banker. He worked in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department. In 1987, he moved to Los Angeles. He helped Goldman Sachs expand into the entertainment industry. He eventually became a vice president at the bank. In 1990, he started his own company called Bannon & Co. This was a boutique investment bank for media.

Bannon's career included several unique roles in media and science. In 1993, he was the acting director of Biosphere 2. This was an earth science research project in Arizona. He shifted the project's focus to studying climate change. He also worked as a Hollywood producer. He produced 18 different films between 1991 and 2016. One of his business deals involved the show Seinfeld. He accepted a financial stake in the show instead of a fee. He still receives residuals from that show today.

In 2007, Bannon helped found Breitbart News. This is a website for news and political commentary. He became the executive chairman after founder Andrew Breitbart died in 2012. Bannon described the site as a platform for the alt-right. This term refers to a specific part of the political right. During the 2016 election, he was the CEO of Donald Trump's campaign. He later became the chief strategist in the White House.

He stayed in that role for seven months before being fired.

Bannon has faced many significant legal challenges. In 2020, he was arrested on federal charges. These charges involved a fundraising campaign called We Build the Wall. The government alleged the money was used for personal enrichment. President Trump later issued a pardon for these federal charges. However, Bannon still faced charges in New York state court. In 2022, he was convicted of contempt of Congress. This was because he refused to comply with a subpoena.

He served four months in a federal prison in 2024.
