Allen's performance style relied heavily on improvisation, or ad-libbing. This means he would make up jokes and dialogue in the moment. He often walked into the studio audience with a microphone. He used this to conduct comedic interviews with regular people. He also used a piano to perform sight gags. One segment, called "Crazy Shots," involved him playing music to accompany funny pictures. Another segment allowed audience members to choose three random musical notes. Allen would then immediately compose a song based on those specific notes.

His career featured many different types of programs. He was a regular panelist on the game show "What's My Line?" from 1953 to 1954. He also hosted variety shows and talent competitions. In 1954, he became the first host of "The Tonight Show." This was the first nationwide late-night television talk show. Later, he hosted "The Steve Allen Show," which was a prime-time variety hour. This program featured many famous musical stars and comedians.
