George Burns was a legendary American entertainer whose career spanned nearly a century. He was a comedian, actor, writer, and singer. He was one of the few performers to find success across vaudeville, radio, film, and television. Audiences recognized him by his signature arched eyebrow and his habit of punctuating jokes with cigar smoke.

Born Nathan Birnbaum on January 20, 1896, in New York City, he was the ninth of twelve children. His parents, Hadassah and Eliezer Birnbaum, were Jewish immigrants from Galicia, which is now part of Poland. His father worked as a coat presser and a substitute cantor at a local synagogue. After his father died during the 1903 influenza epidemic, young Nathan worked to support his family. He performed various jobs, including shining shoes, running errands, and selling newspapers. At age seven, he worked as a syrup maker in a candy shop. This job led to him being "discovered" in the entertainment world.

As he entered professional life, he adopted the stage name George Burns. He claimed he chose this name because of two famous professional baseball players named George Burns. He also took the name from his brother, Izzy, and potentially from the Burns Brothers Coal Company. He also used a stage name to hide his Jewish heritage. During World War I, he was drafted into the United States Army in 1917. However, he failed the physical examination because he was extremely nearsighted.

Burns eventually found his most important professional and personal partner in Gracie Allen. They met in 1923, and he noted that the audience finally recognized his talent when they performed together. They married in 1926 and became the famous comedy duo Burns and Allen. They appeared in many motion pictures during the late 1920s and 1930s. These included films like "The Big Broadcast" with Bing Crosby and "A Damsel in Distress" with Fred Astaire.

The duo also became stars on the radio. Their first radio appearance was as comedy relief for bandleader Guy Lombardo. Their own show began airing on February 15, 1932. The program used sketch comedy and various scenes to build its humor. In 1941, they changed the format to a situation comedy, or "sitcom." This new style focused on their married life and a cast of neighbors and friends. This successful reformat allowed the show to regain great popularity.

In 1950, Burns and Allen moved their success to television. On the "George Burns and Gracie Allen Show," Burns used a unique technique. He would often "break the fourth wall," which means he spoke directly to the audience. He would tell understated jokes or comment on the other characters. Sometimes, he would even pretend to watch the other characters on a television set. The couple also formed their own production company called the McCadden Corporation. This company produced several other television series, including "Mister Ed."

Even after Gracie Allen retired in 1958 due to heart trouble, Burns's career continued. He experienced a massive career revival at age 79. He starred in the 1975 film "The Sunshine Boys." For his performance in this film, he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This achievement solidified his status as a beloved comedy elder statesman. His long life and varied talents left a lasting mark on American entertainment history.
